North Canterbury Deck Joint Repairs

The North Canterbury Bridge Deck Joint Repair project comprised of a package of four bridge repairs scattered throughout mid-Canterbury. These bridges were in varying states of repair and required full replacement of all seals at the deck-deck and deck-abutment interfaces as well as nosing construction and full deck pavement.
Upon completion of the package we were awarded of a separable portion to urgently repair a fifth bridge over the Waihao River south of Waimate. The scope of the Waimate repair included replacement of abutment retaining walls, bolt, debris clearance and a minor bridge jacking operation to replace a rotten timber corbel in the abutment.

Overall the project was completed on time and under budget. Several variations were raised due to the existing condition of the deck joints however a large cost saving material change was approved for the nosings at the Hawkins River Bridge, which brought the contract sum back under the original tender sum.

The bridges repaired in this project are as follows:

  • Craigieburn Stream Bridge on SH 73, RP 107/0, 39.3 km East of Arthur’s Pass
Joint removal, replacement and surfacing reinstatement.
  • Porter River Bridge on SH 73, RP 90/0, 55.5 km East of Arthur’s Pass
