Water shut offs

Business or building owners

If you are the owner of a building with a fire sprinkler we recommend you notify your insurance company about the water shut off.

Tenants

If you are a tenant, please let your landlord know about the planned work.

Businesses

If you run a business or process which requires a constant supply of water, you must provide your own water storage appropriate to the business or process circumstances.

What to do when your water comes back on
When the water is shut off, it is possible for air to become trapped. When the water is reinstated and flows through the pipes, the air is pushed out under pressure and can cause a noise in the pipe. This air release, known as ‘banging’, can shake rust or scale from the pipe walls.

To remove the rust please turn on your outside tap and allow the water to run through the pipes for a few moments to give them a good ‘flush’. By doing this you will stop any debris being drawn inside. It’s simple to do, and only takes a few minutes, but would save you having to call in a plumber to clean out fitting within your house at a later date.

When we turn the water back on you may also see us open the nearest fire hydrants to flush out the pipes on the street.

Super week

A ‘super week’ is planned from the evening of Sunday 4 January to minimise the overall impact and timeframe of the works.

During the super week, we’ll work for 24 hrs a day for a whole week. The intersection of Harewood Road, Gardiners Road and Breens Road will be closed and the one-way system between Watsons Road and Johns Road/State Highway 1 will be in place.

  • From 5pm Sunday 4 January until 5am Monday 12 January 2026, the intersection of Harewood Road, Gardiners Road and Breens Road will be completely closed to traffic.
  • There will be:
    • No entry to Harewood Road for westbound traffic beyond the Farrington Avenue, Highsted Road and Harewood Road roundabout.
    • No entry to Harewood Road for eastbound traffic beyond the intersection of Trafford Street.
    • A road closure on Breens Road between north of Lochmore Street and Harewood Road.
    • A road closure on Gardiners Road between south of Kamahi Place and Harewood Road.
    • Two-way traffic will be maintained between Kamahi Place and St. Ives Street on Gardiners Road, this will allow residents to access their property but will reduce the availability of on-street parking in this area.
  • From 5pm Sunday 4 January, we'll also re-establish the one-way system on Harewood Road between Watsons Road and Russley Road/State Highway 1.
  • There will be:
    • No-entry to Harewood Road from Johns Road/State Highway 1.
    • No left turn from Waimakariri Road onto Harewood Road.
    • Traffic will be able to travel westbound only between Watsons Road and Russley Road/State Highway 1

For more information, please see the works notice below.
