Location Bishopdale, Harewood

Project Stage In progress

Date of completion March 2026

Since mid-November 2025, we’ve been upgrading services along Harewood Road.

We’re installing two new sets of traffic signals on Harewood Road, at the Breens Road and Gardiners Road intersection and outside Harewood School. We’re also installing watermain and stormwater upgrades at these locations and minor safety improvements near Harewood School.

In December 2025 Christchurch City Council added additional work to upgrade water pipes along Harewood Road that was originally scheduled for later in 2026. This was done to avoid coming back to the area and causing further disruption.

The additional work includes replacing:

  • main and submain water pipes in a 200-metre section of Harewood Road between Copenhagen Bakery and Crofton Road
  • submain and crossover pipes in a 360-metre section of Harewood Road from the intersection of Stanleys Road to Wooldridge Road.

Our work on Harewood Road, Gardiners Road, Waimakariri Road and Whitchurch Place is now expected to be completed by early March 2026.

On Tuesday 27 January the lights at the Harewood Road, Gardiners Road, and Breens Road intersection were commissioned.

Thank you for your ongoing patience as we work in the area.

Super week

From 5pm Sunday 4 January to 5am Monday 12 January, we worked 24 hours a day in a ‘super week’ of construction.

Working for 24 hours under road closures allowed us to complete a massive amount of work, including:

  • removing 660 cubic metres of road surface using a mill and excavators
  • preparing the intersection for resurfacing by layering and compacting new gravel-like road material into an even base
  • installing two structural layers and a final surface layer of asphalt, which totalled 3,500m2 of pavement surfacing, or 1000 tonnes of asphalt
  • installing 100 metres of new stormwater pipes on Harewood Road between Breens Road and Copenhagen Bakery
  • installing asphalt in the footpaths around the intersection
  • pouring concrete in the central median islands
  • installing electrical components and underground services for two new sets of traffic signals.
  • installing the final layer of asphalt on Harewood Road between Stanleys Road and Waimakriri Road
  • installing the raised pedestrian crossing, and a new v-channel in the footpath between 709 Harewood Road and Harewood School, which helps drain stormwater
  • starting work to widen the footpath on Harewood Road between Stanleys Road and 709 Harewood Road

We know that night works can be disruptive and thank the residents and local businesses in the area for their patience during our super week.
