Why is this project happening?

The project aims to:

- Improve road condition and safety for all users.

- Create safer connections for cyclists and pedestrians.

- Support a more accessible and enjoyable coastal route.

- Upgrade ageing underground infrastructure and improve drainage.

- Enhance the look and feel of Marine Parade, including new planting.

    What are we doing?

    Key improvements include:

    - Renewing the road between Hawke Street and 187 Marine Parade.

    - A new two-way cycleway from Hawke Street to Lonsdale Street.

    - Upgraded shared path from Lonsdale Street to Bowhill Road.

    - Three raised platforms to slow cyclists.

    - Road narrowing to fit the cycleway and parking layout.

    - A new zebra crossing near Hawke Street.

    - Pedestrian island and kerb buildouts at the beach carpark.

    - Upgraded bus stops with new markings and tactile pavers.

    - Speed humps at the Rawhiti Avenue intersection.

    - Kerb and channel renewal from Lonsdale Street to 142 Marine Parade.

    - Garden bed and tree removals with new planting along the dunes.

    - 12 existing carparks between Rawhiti Avenue and Bowhill Rad will be permanently removed to accomodate the cycleway. These include:

    5 of these car parks will be removed on Marine Parade due to the new crossing point.

    7 of these car parks will be removed in the parking bays on the coast side of Marine Parade near Rawhiti Avenue.

    - The car parks will be between Hawke Street and Bowhill Road. (The five on-street parks are south of Rawhiti Avenue)

    How long will the project take?

    The work is from November 2025 to June 2026 and will be delivered in four stages:

    - Stage 1 (Before Christmas): Watermain upgrades and retaining walls.

    - Stage 2 (Jan to Apr): Stormwater upgrades and major transport improvements.

    - Stage 3 (Mar to May): Final road pavement and surfacing.

    - Stage 4 (May to June): Finishing work and tidy-up.

    Exact dates may be affected by weather, but we will keep residents updated.

    How will traffic be managed?

    - Marine Parade will operate one-way northbound through the work area.

    - Southbound traffic will detour via Bowhill Road, Keyes Road, Hawke Street.

    - No right turns will be allowed from Bowhill Road, Rawhiti Avenue, or Lonsdale Street onto Marine Parade.

    - The speed limit will be reduced to 30km/h.

    - Residents should expect delays and allow extra travel time.

    - Later in the project, the one-way system will extend further north between Lonsdale Street and Hawke Street, updates will be shared before this change.
