Details:

We're installing cable ducts in the road at the intersection of Ferry Road and Hopkins Street, and on Hopkins Street

The ducts will carry a new underground power cable we are installing from the Bromley Substation on Ruru Road to the Milton Substation on Milton Street.

  • Installing dewatering equipment
  • Digging a trench in the road
  • Laying concrete in the base of the trench
  • Installing the plastic ducts
  • Laying concrete over the ducts
  • Reinstating the road surface

Impacts on traffic

To do this work safely, traffic management will be in place from 16 January 2023

The work will happen in two stages:

Stage 1 (up to four weeks)

  • Ferry road, between Smith Street and 537 Ferry Road, will be reduced to one lane
  • Temporary traffic lights will allow traffic to flow in both directions
  • Hopkins Street will be closed between Ferry Road and 4 Hopkins Street
  • Resident access will be maintained from Hopkins Street
Stage 2 (up to four weeks)
  • Hopkins Street will be closed from Ferry Road to Hobson Street
  • Ferry Road will return to two lanes and the temporary traffic lights will be removed
  • Resident access will be maintained from Hopkins Street

Impacts of work

  • There will be increased noise, dust, and vibration from the use of machinery for activities such as saw cutting, hydro excavation, and road sealing.
  • On-Street parking will be affected where we are working. Cones will indicate where parking will not be available.
  • Property access will be maintained where possible. We will work with businesses and residents during the work. Please let us know if you have any specific property access needs e.g. medical visits, home help, large vehicle deliveries or planned works.

Update on Maces Road/St Johns Street work

Maces Road

  • We have laid the cable ducts in the trench on Maces Road (outside number 120) and at the intersection with St Johns Street. We laid three ducts in each trench
  • We'll start reinstating the road from Monday 5 December
  • We plan to remove the one-way system on Maces Road from 8 December. This depends on progress and weather conditions

St Johns Street

  • Dewatering has been installed on St Johns Street
  • Temporary traffic lights are controlling traffic on St Johns Street
  • Next week we'll start excavating the trench for the cable ducts along St Johns Street

Why use cable ducts?

The new power cable will be installed in the road. Where the ground water table is near the surface, or the cable passes through a busy road intersection, we sometimes lay cable ducts first. This saves time and reduces traffic impacts when we come to install the cable later on.
